CALL 6: Medical waste facility faces fine

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- MedAssure, a medical waste facility, was fined $9,000 in violation of its state permit, which does not allow for the processing of fetal remains.

Call 6 Investigates reached out to the company and to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management after receiving a tip about portions of aborted fetuses being shipped to Indianapolis.

IDEM launched an investigation after RTV6 started asking questions. Its report shows that MedAssure accepted fetal remains from Sept. 2012 through Jan. 2016 from a Planned Parenthood clinic in St. Louis.

The remains were being sent by the clinic's contractor, Pathology Services Inc., of Missouri.

MedAssure has informed pathology services that it is prohibited from accepting certain medical waste and is requiring that the prohibited medical waste be segregated from other medical waste, and not be sent to them.
