Cancer survivor passes out care packages to patients

INDIANAPOLIS – An Indy woman has chosen to use her life-changing diagnosis to help others in need.

Lisa Shivers endured months of chemotherapy after she was diagnosed with cancer.

“I went to get a flu shot. I went to the emergency room in October and came back with a Lymphoma diagnosis,” said Shivers.

Chemotherapy had a rough impact on her body. Shivers recalls hair loss, weight loss, lack of appetite and other side effects. She said experiencing these items first hand encouraged her to help other cancer patients.

Through her business, The Lisa Project, Shivers hands out free care packages that include the essentials.

“A soft bristle toothbrush because once again - mouth soreness and mouth tenderness. I also have hand sanitizer because when your blood levels drop to zero and you're susceptible to germs so you have to be protected,” she said.

Shivers started with a $500 goal to help jumpstart the project through GoFundMe, but today nearly $3,500 has been donated. To date, Shivers has passed out over 200 care packages within the past two years to patients at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

“A lot of people want to know how much they owe me, and I say the only thing you can do to pay me back is to get better. That's all I want,” she said.
