INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman was trapped inside a submerged car Thursday evening after it drove into an in-ground pool on the east side.

The crash happened just after 8 p.m. on the 8500 block of East 16th Street, just a little west of the intersection of 16th Street and Post Road.

Juan Zepeda told firefighters he and his four children were home watching TV when they heard a car strike the residence. He then looked out the window to see the car travel across the front of his house, through his fence and into his in-ground pool.

Bystanders ran to the house and jumped into the water to try to remove the female driver from the vehicle.

Five IMPD officers and an Indianapolis firefighter joined the bystanders in the pool, taking turns going under water to try to break a window or get the door open.

Responders were eventually able to free the woman, who was immediately rushed to Community Hospital East in critical condition.

A male subject located just east of the crash was being questioned to determine his role, if any, in the incident.
