Carmel could require showers in new buildings

Posted

CARMEL, Ind. -- More buildings and businesses in Carmel may soon have to add showers as a way to make the city more bicycle-friendly.

Those showers would be for employees who decided to ride to work, rather than drive.

In a city where even some of the statutes ride their bikes, it's no surprise that cyclists find most of Carmel bicycle-friendly already.

"The Monon Trail's great, everything's connected, plenty of sights to see, a bunch of friendly people," said Joe Albano.

A new proposal from City Councilor Bruce Kimball could take Carmel's cycle-friendly status to the next level.

"The Monon is going to become the front door for many businesses, so it's very important that it becomes bicycle-friendly not only to recreational people on the weekends, but to the commuter on the week day," Kimball said.

Under the proposed ordinance, certain new businesses and buildings would have to include long-term bike parking and showers or locker rooms in their plans.

Current businesses that are big enough would have to add them only if they remodel to a certain level.

"A lot of our buildings already require showers if they're in our overlay areas," Kimball said. "Bicyclists, just like anybody else, when they get to their destination, they want to feel refreshed."

The proposed ordinance was set for discussion at the next council meeting on Monday.
