Carmel Monon Greenway users want speed limits enforced

Posted

CARMEL, Ind. – Users of the Monon in Carmel expressed concern about bicyclist on the trail.

Many walkers and runners said some bicyclist ride too fast and cause dangerous conditions.

"Some bikers do travel too fast,” said Ron Coan. “They go by too closely without warning.  It can be dangerous. You move over they hit you, or my dog jumps out at them after being startled it can be a serious incident."

Within the past five years, there have been 35 crashes on the Monon Greenway despite the 15 mph speed limit between 111th and 136th streets.

"I think bicyclists should be aware of people that are around,” said Tracy Alberta. “One of the things I do is say ‘on your left’ when I'm passing people and they appreciate that."

Since there is as many as 400,000 people a year who utilize the trail, police can sometimes be found in the area.

"The police put out one of their speed trailers with a reader board on it that let people know what their speed is in this area and asked them to be cautious by the message on the digital board,” said Carmel City Councilman Ron Carter.

Some trail users said speed limits shouldn’t dictate how people treat one another.

"We need to be kinder to one another,” said Jennifer Cole. “I don't think we need officials telling us to do it. It needs to happen inside of us."
