INDIANAPOLIS -- Like in Indiana, Mexican workers are protected by a federal minimum wage. The minimum wage in Mexico is per day, not per hour.
The Mexican government raised the minimum wage last month to $4.25 per day. Carrier will not tell RTV6 if the production jobs going to Mexico will be paid hourly or per day.
The company is offering $6 when benefits are included. While the company won't talk salary information, those figures are listed on its Mexican job postings.
There is one posting about people in school looking for a career in production, since there is a labor shortage in Monterrey. The monthly pay ranges between 3,000 to 5,000 pesos a month. At today's exchange rate, that ranges between $168 and $281. The job is also eligible for an extra $253 in financial aid.
Someone seeking to join in the area of Industrial Engineer Support must know English and have the skills to assist workers on the assembly line. The position pays monthly between 9,000 and 11,000 pesos. That ranges between $500 to more than $600 monthly in pay.
As for the pay issue, the local Steelworkers Union thought the jobs would be receiving an hourly wage. A letter from state economic officials cites the company as saying the average cost for wages for workers in Monterrey is $3 per hour, plus another $3 per hour in benefits.
