CARROLL COUNTY, Ind. -- A body recovered from the Tippecanoe River on Tuesday is believed to be that of a man who went missing Sunday morning.
The search began after witnesses called 911 around 8 a.m. Sunday to report that a man was calling for help while floating downriver amid a swift current.
The Department of Natural Resources says family members reported Michael S. Bane, 38, missing on Monday. They believe Bane intended to swim across the river to a friend's house, according to DNR. Witness descriptions are similar to the man described by the family.
Crews searched the water for two days to locate the man in distress and were able to recover a body on Tuesday. That body has not been officially identified but DNR officers say Bane's family has tentatively identified the body based on tattoos and other markings.
The coroner will release an official identification at a later time.
