CARROLL COUNTY — The death of a zebra on a farm in Carroll County on Wednesday during the arctic blast was an accident, according to the sheriff.

Sheriff Tobe Leazenby said they responded to the farm in the Pittsburgh area for a report of animal abuse. When they arrived they found two zebras on the property and one of them had died.

After consulting with a veterinarian with the State Board of Health, Sheriff Leazenby says they determined that the zebra had gotten one of its hooves stuck in the fence line and was unable to get out of the cold. The animal was also breathing in the dangerously cold air when it panicked which was likely the cause of its death.

Sheriff Leazenby says the farm owners have other exotic animals, including a kangaroo, and some domestic animals like a miniature horse on their property as well. His deputies determined that all of the animals on the property had adequate shelter from the cold and says the zebra's death was a "tragic accident" but was not from neglect by its owners.

The second zebra was removed from the property as a precaution and taken somewhere warm.

The farm owners do not face any charges.
