LOGANSPORT, Ind. -- A toddler is dead after police say he got ahold of a gun and accidentally shot himself Thursday morning.
Logansport Police were called to the home in the 1500 block of Treen Street for a report of a child that had been shot.
Police say the child did not live at the home but was there because his father was helping the homeowner with a flooring project. Police say the child got ahold of a semi-automatic weapon and fired one shot, hitting himself in the face.
The child was flown to Riley Hospital for Children where he later died. His identity has not been released.
An adult babysitter was watching the child and told police she was not aware that the gun was within reach of the child. It is still unclear how the child got ahold of the gun.
Police do not expect to file charges in the case, but it will be turned over to the Cass County Prosecutor for review.
