Census Bureau entering final phase of the big count

INDIANAPOLIS — The Census Bureau is getting down to the nitty-gritty when it comes to figuring out how many people live in the U.S. as of the year 2020.

Census workers will begin visiting households in the Indianapolis and Lake County areas that have not yet completed the 2020 Census starting July 30. The Census count is scheduled to be completed no later than October 31.

The operation that is launching July 30 is specifically for those households that have not yet responded to the 2020 Census.

As of now, just over 61% of households in Marion County have already completed the 2020 Census. The county is slightly behind state and national self-response rates. In Indiana, 66.4% of households have completed the census, and the national self-response rate is 62.1%.

The deadline for responding to the census has been extended to Oct. 31 because of the pandemic, and residents can still complete the census online. Phone and mail-in options are still available as well.
