CLD helps 'emerging scholars' with college dream

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- Many students and their parents will be experiencing sticker shock as the prospect of paying for college looms overhead.

While there are lots of scholarships out there, applying for one can be just as hard as getting into a four-year school. The Center for Leadership Development helps students overcome that burden.

Aaliyah Cole, an "emerging scholar" at the CLD, has big dreams of going to college. But she and her family can't afford it alone.

"Winning a scholarship, to me, would mean that someone took the time to see I am more than just a student," she said. "I am a scholar."

In the past 12 years, CLD has awarded more than $16 million in scholarships with assistance from a number of public and private college, universities and corporate partneres.

RTV6's parent company E.W. Scripps was so inspired by CLD's mission that it decided to sponsor a $4,000 scholarship for a student pursuing broadcast journalism.

The winner of the RTV6 Scholarship will be announced next month during the CLD's awards banquet.
