CENTER GROVE, Ind. -- Hundreds of concerned parents attended a forum about transgender bathroom rights at Center Grove High School Thursday evening.
The discussion remained civil throughout the evening. Many parents spoke out against President Barack Obama's recent imploring of schools to allow transgender students access to the restroom that best fits their gender identity.
Others simply wanted to better understand how the school would address transgender issues as they relate to shower and locker room access.
"My biggest concern, candidly, is the safety of all the girls in the community, and especially the girls that go into the locker room," said Janet Prather.
District officials said they have always dealt with transgender students on a case-by-case basis – always striving to make appropriate accommodations. They say they plan to consider all opinions shared through the next few months to determine whether any policy adjustments are necessary.
