WABASH COUNTY — A 2-year-old died Thursday after the vehicle he was riding in became submerged in a flooded road.

According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, ISP officers, the Wabash County Sheriff's Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources responded to a 911 call reporting an occupied vehicle that was trapped in flood waters on Wabash County Road 925 South east of State Road 13.

Investigators believe the car passed a high water sign, which had been posted to warn drivers of possible flooding after multiple days of rain in the area. The child's mother, Anthonitte Carter, 22, Indianapolis, allegedly did not see the sign and drove into floodwater, which had completely covered the road. After the vehicle entered the water, it was carried to the north side of the road by the water's current and became completely submerged.

Carter was able to escape and was rescued by Indiana DNR conservation officers, but the child, Eric Long, was found deceased inside the vehicle.

Officers are investigating the incident.
