INDIANAPOLIS -- A child was hit by a vehicle and killed on the city's northwest side Sunday night.

Police responded to the 5400 block of West 38th Street around 6:07 p.m. for a call of a child that had been hit by a vehicle.

The child, a 2-year-old girl, was in the parking lot of Always Shining Hand Car Wash, a car wash that is owned by her family when she was hit by a 17-year-old.

According to a press release from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the 17-year-old was driving to the car wash to pick up his paycheck. He saw children playing in the parking lot and stopped his vehicle to allow the children to move. Believing the children had moved away from the front of his vehicle, he continued driving and hit the child.

Police say he immediately stopped and is cooperating with the investigation. He was taken to Eskenazi Hospital for a blood draw, which is standard procedure for such accidents.
