INDIANAPOLIS — The city is stepping up to help expectant mothers in Indianapolis.

The Violence Reduction Team partnered with local organizations to host a community baby shower for families.

Parents went home with important supplies like car seats, strollers and diapers. They also took some training classes.

Organizers came up with this idea in response to a recent rise of accidental deaths of babies and toddlers.

"We've noticed a slight uptick in incidents with young people, really young babies, here lately in the city, so we thought, 'Let's get in front of this and really try to get some education out here for our young parents to help curb some of those incidents."

It's the first event of its kind, and the city plans to hold another in the future.
