FRANKFORT — The city of Frankfort wants to make sure they grow and prosper.

The Mayor of Frankfort, Chris McBarnes, made sure to do just that with his promise to Frankfort high school students: If you want to go to Ivy Tech, the community will pay for it — with help from taxes, from industry and donations.

The mayor announced the 'Frankfort Promise Program' on the afternoon of Jan. 10. High school students who want to go to Ivy Tech for an associates degree, or certificate, will be able to. If financial aid and scholarships fall short of the total cost, the program will fill the gap.

Frankfort senior, Ivan Santos, says that is a dream come true.

"Definitely many students will take advantage of it. This will help the city grow and help Frankfort moving forward," he said.

"Rural Indiana... we're fighting to keep our heads above water," said Mayor McBarnes. "We've got to continuously think in an innovative and creative manner. So we not only survive but thrive."

NHK makes 380,000 car seats a year for Subaru vehicles. The company is very supportive of the promise program.

Companies like NHK, have to fight for qualified employees throughout the Midwest. If students in Frankfort are getting the proper education, through the promise program, it makes their struggle for employees less demanding.

"Anything that can help us support the community. The community provides us with our workers, we are more than happy to partner with them on this endeavor," NHK Plant Manager, Richard Reck, said.

Hitech Label Incorporated will be expanding later this year and will be looking for workers in the future.
