INDIANAPOLIS -- Community leaders want the owners of a troubled north side apartment complex to either fix the problems or sell it.
Keystone-Millersville Neighborhood Association President Alma Trawick calls the Keystone North apartments an eyesore and said they've been a breeding ground for crime.
They were the scene of a violent double shooting earlier this week that left a mother dead and a father fighting for his life. The shooting happened in front of the couple’s children.
And that’s just one example of the problems the north side apartment complex has seen in the last year.
The Avondale Meadows neighborhood has seen a resurgence of improvements over the past couple of years, including a new YMCA, schools and even businesses. But Trawick said the Keystone North apartments negate a lot of the good that's been happening.
“Nobody wants to come here because of the crime [at those apartments], because of the non-repairs of the homes,” said Trawick. “People will feel better with where they live if the apartment they lived in was fixed.”
Trawick isn’t the only one voicing her concerns, Darrin Orr with the Meadows Foundation said they’ve demanded that the owners of Keystone North focus on fixing their complex or sell them.
Orr said they have big plans in place for the complex if they can get ownership.
“Initially we will put $1.5 million into it to make livable standards,” said Orr. “The spirit of our community is to achieve a level of excellence, and they haven’t done that historically.”
There was already one plan on the table to buy the apartments, but it fell through at the last minute. Orr said the Meadows Foundation is not done trying to fix the problem.
