INDIANAPOLIS — Workers took advantage of good weather Tuesday to begin the first phase of widening the Monon Trail in Indianapolis.

Geotechnical borings are underway, starting at the south end of the trail.

The boring is done to get soil samples to make sure the ground can support added pavement.

The drilling sites are about 850 feet apart, according to the Department of Public Works, and the project should be done before the end of this month.

Next year, the entire trail in Marion County will be widened and repaved from East 10th to East 96th Street.

Up to four additional feet of pavement will be added, except where the trail crosses a bridge.

Drilling will not close any part of the Monon, but trail users should watch for construction equipment and give crews plenty of room.

Workers are starting at the south end of the trail and moving north.
