14-year-old killed in Canal Walk shooting was trying to rob someone, witnesses told IMPD

INDIANAPOLIS — A teen boy who died after a shooting on the Canal Walk in Downtown Indianapolis early Monday morning was attempting to rob someone, according to police.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were called to the 300 block of Walnut Street around 2 a.m. for a report of a person who had been shot during an attempted robbery.

Arriving officers found 14-year-old Curtis White in critical condition at the scene. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

The alleged shooter was legally carrying a firearm, according to IMPD. Witnesses told police that the teen was attempting to rob the alleged shooter, who fired their weapon in self-defense.

Police say the alleged shooter and witnesses remained on the scene and are cooperating with their investigation.

The shooting remains under investigation and no arrests have been made at this time.
