ELWOOD — Two people died Friday night in a crash during a police chase in Madison County.

Madison County Sheriff Scott Mellinger said the crash occurred at 8:35 p.m. Friday in the area of County Roads 500 West and 1100 North after Elwood Police Department officers began a "vehicle pursuit."

After the chase began in Elwood, the two people traveled east on State Road 28 and then southbound on County Road 500 West.

Mellinger said they continued for one mile to County Road 1100 when the driver of the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo left the roadway and struck two trees.

"The vehicle was occupied by two male individuals who were pronounced deceased at the scene," Mellinger said in an email.

The sheriff’s department did not identify the crash victims. The crash remains under investigation.
