KOKOMO — An alleged burglar was taken to the hospital for an apparent drug overdose after a neighbor spotted an apparent break-in at a home west of Kokomo on Saturday and called police.
It happened shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the 6900 block of County Road West 00 North South, west of Kokomo, according to a report from the Howard County Sheriff's Office. A neighbor noticed a vehicle in the driveway of a house and the neighbor told dispatchers the residents at that location were out of town.
When deputies arrived, they found evidence someone had broken into the house. The homeowner was contacted and told deputies no one had permission to be inside the house. Deputies entered and searched the residence. A police canine, Storm, led deputies to the second floor where a walk-in closet door was barricaded from the inside.
Officers secured the house and attempted to communicate with the people inside the closet. At 12:25 p.m. SWAT officers forced the door open and found an 18-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man inside. The man was treated by medics and taken to St. Vincent's Hospital for a suspected drug overdose, deputies said.
Both the man and the woman were booked into the Howard County Jail on suspicion of burglary and suspicion of resisting law enforcement.
