Alleged drunken driver arrested after speeding 145 mph on Northwest Indiana interstate

LAKE COUNTY — A Gary man was arrested early Sunday for allegedly driving 145 mph while drunk on an interstate in Northwest Indiana.

According to information from Indiana State Police, a trooper was patrolling Interstate 80/94 just after midnight when a driver in a black Dodge Challenger sped past him. The trooper caught up to the Challenger and clocked the driver's speed at 145 mph. The posted speed limit in the area is 55 mph.

The trooper made a traffic stop near Ripley Avenue and believed the driver, Damien L. Holmes, 29, was impaired.

State police said Holmes voluntarily performed field sobriety tests and took a breath test, which registered his blood alcohol content at .13%. The legal limit in Indiana is .08%

Holmes was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor, and reckless driving, a Class B misdemeanor.
