RICHMOND — A Richmond couple face neglect charges after their four-month-old suffered injuries that doctors and police say were caused by abuse.
27-year-old Matthew Shaffer and his 26-year-old girlfriend, Casey Miller, each face five felony neglect charges, including neglect of a dependent resulting in catastrophic injury.
When the baby girl arrived at Reid Hospital in Richmond in April, doctors knew she was seriously injured and would need to be sent to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.
There, according to information from Richmond police and the Wayne County Prosecutor, physicians found the infant suffered from brain bleeding, a broken rib, vertebrae injuries, a fractured arm and serious eye injuries.
After more than two weeks in the hospital, the baby was released to foster care, suffering from brain damage and vision loss. In a report, a Riley doctor said the infant was a victim of abuse, including a shaking described as violent.
Charges against the parents were filed this week in Wayne County Superior Court and arrest warrants were issued for Shaffer and Miller. As of late-Friday, neither had been booked into the county jail.
