LEBANON, Ind. -- A Boone County Jail corrections officer was fired and then arrested Thursday for allegedly battering an inmate.
Boone County Sheriff Michael Nielsen said in a statement Wednesday that his office had been made aware of the alleged incident within eight hours of the occurrence.
Nielsen said his deputies immediately started an investigation, which resulting in the arrest of corrections officer Daniel Slowik, 30, of Avon, on a preliminary charge of misdemeanor battery.
Following his arrest, Slowik was booked into the Boone County Jail where, minutes before, he had been an employee.
The inmate Slowik allegedly battered, 30-year-old Jaimie Thorpe of Lebanon, Indiana, was transported to Witham Hospital to be checked out for a complaint of pain. The sheriff’s office said Thorpe had no visible injuries.
Nielsen said Slowik’s arrest should be a message that no one is above the law.
“No one person is held above the law, and as public servants we are held to a higher standard,” Nielsen said in a written statement. “I will continue to strive to make this office the best it can be.”
Slowik had not yet appeared before a judge for a bail hearing.
