Ex-Ben Davis teacher sentenced to 3 years in child seduction case

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- A former Ben Davis teacher will spend three years in prison for a months-long sexual relationship with a student.

Robert Chin, 40, agreed to plead guilty last month to two counts of child seduction. On Thursday, a Marion County judge sentenced him to three years in prison on the first count.

On the second count, Chin was sentenced to three suspended years in prison. He must also register as a sex offender for 10 years and continue ongoing psycho-sexual counseling.

Chin was arrested in April after an 18-year-old Ben Davis student told police she had been having “more than just a student-teacher relationship” with Chin since the fall of 2015.

The girl said the relationship had turned physical several months before her 17th birthday, and that she had met Chin on multiple occasions at the Clarion Hotel and Baymont Inn for sex.

The student also told police that she would send nude photos of herself to Chin over text and Snapchat because he requested them.

Chin initially told police that he and the student were just "really good friends" and they had a "super relationship," but he eventually admitted to having sex with the student on multiple occasions, including before she turned 18.

Chin was taken back into custody in Marion County following the sentencing hearing. The court ruled his probation may be transferred to Grant County once he has served his prison sentence.
