WHITELAND, Ind. -- The FBI arrested a suspected bank robber known as the “Double Hat Bandit” last week outside of a motel in Whiteland, Indiana.
The agency said Shayne Carson, 54, was located and taken into custody without incident by officers from the Indianapolis FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and the Whiteland Police Department.
In a criminal complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Salt Lake City, Carson is accused in the Dec. 19, 2016, robbery of the U.S. Bank in West Valley City, Utah.
Carson is also reportedly suspected in 13 other bank robberies throughout Utah, Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Idaho between December 2016 and July 2017.
The suspect in those robberies wore two hats during the crime, earning him the nickname the “Double Hat Bandit.”
Carson appeared for his arraignment in Indianapolis on Friday. Federal officials said he will be transferred to Utah to face the charge of robbery out of Salt Lake City.
