INDIANAPOLIS -- A former Washington Township Schools teaching assistant pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexual misconduct with a former student.

Demario Thomas, 29, was arrested in June after a 15-year-old student’s mother told police she thought her daughter was having an inappropriate relationship with Thomas.

The victim eventually told detectives that she’d known Thomas for three years while he was a student teacher at Westlane Middle School and that the two of them had had sex. She also said Thomas knew how old she was.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in the case, Thomas admitted the relationship to police, saying he was in love with the student and that he knew how old she was.

Thomas told police he met the victim at school but that their sexual relationship didn’t begin until after he resigned his teaching assistant job in April.

Washington Township Schools released a statement following his arrest saying the district had no reports of inappropriate relationships with students while he was employed there.

On Tuesday, Thomas entered a plea of guilty in Marion County Criminal Court 6 to one count of sexual misconduct with a minor.

The terms of the plea stipulate that Thomas will not be sentenced to more than six years in prison. He will also have to register as a sex offender upon his release.

A sentencing hearing was set for Oct. 25.
