NORTH VERNON — A group of high school students were arrested and charged after they left school without permission.

The North Vernon Police Department said school officials say the group of students was staging a demonstration inside the school which spilled out outside. Police were called to investigate after a group of those students left school grounds without getting permission from the school or having proper parental permission.

Police located and detained nine of those students. Police say none of the students involved in the incident had permission to leave the school.

The North Vernon Police Department cited Indiana Statute IC 20-33-2-23, which allows officers to take children into custody during normal school hours if the child is found in a public place.

North Vernon Police say the students were all charged and then released to their parents or guardians.
