INDIANAPOLIS — An investigation is underway into what police are calling a possible botched robbery following a fatal shooting in Irvington on Thursday evening.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, East District officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 5600 block of E. Washington Street just before 7 p.m.
Responding officers found a victim, described as an adult woman, inside Josephine's suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by Indianapolis EMS. She was identified as 68-year-old Terri Lee Heady.
East District Commander Michael Leepper said officers responding to the incident encountered a man, armed with a handgun, who fled the scene. Officers chased him and located him a block from the initial scene.
Commander Leepper said officers spoke with the man for several minutes in an attempt to get him to drop the handgun and be taken into custody. The man refused to cooperate with the police.
During this confrontation, police said the man shot himself. He was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
At this point in the investigation, police believe the man, identified as 58-year-old Terry E. Morgan, is the suspect in the fatal shooting.
Commander Leepper confirmed that no officers fired their weapons.
"The community of Irvington is one of the tightest communities that we have on the east side of Indianapolis, in the city of Indianapolis," Commander Leepper said. "This is devastating and will be a hard hit to this community."
Officers are collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing video surveillance to get a clearer picture of this incident. At this time, police believe all parties are accounted for, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
