SEYMOUR — A man accused of shoplifting who allegedly had a gun died Sunday night after he was shot by police in Seymour, according to Indiana State Police.

Seymour Police Department officers were called to the Walmart Supercenter in the 1600 block of East Tipton Street after a man allegedly stole merchandise from the store, Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles said in a news release.

Officers found a white male walking along Tipton Street who matched the suspect description. Wheeles said the man ran across the street and into a ditch while allegedly armed with a handgun. Two Seymour police officers fired their weapons, hitting the man, Wheeles said.

Medics transported the man to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour where he died. No officers were injured during the incident. The man and police officers have not been identified.

Detectives from the Indiana State Police Versailles Post are investigating the incident. Wheeles said the case will be presented to the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office for review after state police complete their investigation.
