TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A Columbus man was charged with attempted murder Tuesday for allegedly attempting to kill an employee of the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department while being transported to prison.

Joshua B. Stam, 26, was served with an arrest warrant out of Miami County on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, attempted escape and battery resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer.

The warrant was served at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, where Stam is currently incarcerated.

Prosecutors accuse Stam of attacking Decatur County Sheriff’s Department Transport Office David Weakley while being transported back to the Miami Correctional Facility following a court appearance in August.

According to a release from Indiana State Police, Stam was able to free himself from handcuffs and allegedly choked Weakley and attempted to take his department-issued handgun.

Stam was stopped and restrained by two IDOC auto maintenance employees who rushed to Weakley’s aid.

Stam was sentenced to two years in prison in April after he pleaded guilty to biting a Columbus police officer who was trying to arrest him for making a false police report in January. He was on parole at the time from a 2010 conviction for burglary.

According to IDOC records, Stam’s earliest projected release date is now July 2022.
