HENDRICKS COUNTY — A bank robbery suspect was shot and killed by police in Hendricks County on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Indiana State Police, the incident happened near U.S. 40 in Belville.
Police said an investigation took place as a follow-up to a robbery at Chase Bank in Plainfield on Tuesday. A warrant was issued for the suspect, later identified as Dustin R. Horwoth of Clayton, Indiana, who fled the scene.
During the investigation on Wednesday, officers located Horwoth and attempted a traffic stop on his vehicle. Police said Horwoth did not stop, leading to a pursuit.
Plainfield Police deployed an immobilization device referred to as a grappler, bringing the car to a stop on U.S. 40 at around 12:40 p.m.
Horwoth got out of his car and fled the scene on foot, armed with a handgun.
Police chased Horwoth into a grassy area behind a building on the south side of U.S. 40. At the end of the chase, officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender with Horwoth for nearly 20 minutes. ISP said the interaction led to Plainfield officers firing their weapons, striking Horwoth.
Officers immediately rendered emergency medical aid to Horwath, who was then transported to the hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured.
ISP is handling the investigation. U.S. 40 was closed for several hours before being reopened.
In accordance with department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The involved officers were body camera-equipped and there was also a law enforcement drone deployed, police said.
