LAFAYETTE — A Tippecanoe County man is accused of chaining three children to their beds and hitting them with belts when they won't do what he says.

Ryan Alexander Hubertz Bass, 28, is facing multiple charges of neglect, criminal confinement and battery.

According to a probable cause document filed against Bass in Tippecanoe County, the children are all under the age of 8, and their mother claims Bass is their primary caregiver.

Detectives began interviewing the family after someone who visited them reported seeing bruising on one of the children and chains and locks inside the home, the probable cause states.

During interviews with the victims, detectives were told that they were chained to their beds and would be hit both with hands and a belt by Bass if they didn't do what he said.

Detectives also spoke with the mother, who claims her child, who is under the age of 3, would be chained to the bed so that they would not get into things and run away, court documents say.

During questioning, Bass admitted to detectives that he would strike the children "with an open palm to the forehead." He also admitted to chaining the youngest child to the bed.

Bass was arrested on January 22 and is being held at the Tippecanoe County Jail on a $1,500 bond.
