DECATUR COUNTY — A man has been arrested in Decatur County after authorities say he abducted a child he likely met through social media.
The Decatur County Sheriff's Office first responded to a child abduction report in the western part of the county Sunday after a family member saw a child at their home in a vehicle with a stranger. The family member told deputies that they confronted the stranger, who sped away with the child, but they were able to flatten the man's tire before he got away.
A short time later, deputies spotted the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop where they rescued the child, who is under the age of 14. Miguel Hernandez, 27, was arrested at the scene. Family members of the child say they do not know the Hernandez.
According to the sheriff's office, preliminary evidence suggests that the child and Hernandez may have connected on social media.
Hernandez is charged with child molestation and kidnapping.
The incident remains under investigation by the Decatur County Sheriff's Office.
