ZIONSVILLE — Police have arrested a man on a firearms charge stemming from the investigation into the death of a man found near a popular walking trail over the weekend.

According to Zionsville Police, a neighbor found the body of Samuel Bennett, 23, near a retention pond near the Zionsville Rail Trail just after 7 a.m. Sunday. Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene and police say he appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.

During the course of their investigation, police discovered a handgun in a wooded area near the Rail Trail and obtained search warrants for two locations. The first search warrant was served at the Walnut HIll Apartments in Zionsville. At that location, David Meschino was arrested and charged with criminal transfer of a firearm. A search warrant served at a second location in the Village Walk Subdivision did not result in any arrests.

Police have not said whether the handgun found near the Rail Trail was the murder weapon.

On Thursday, Zionsville police issued a statement saying they had identified person(s) of interest in Bennett's murder.
