ANDERSON — A man was shot multiple times during what police say may have been an attempted robbery.

Anderson Police Department officers responded to the scene in the 1500 block of Nichol Avenue just after 4 a.m. Friday for a report of a person shot.

Police say a 23-year-old man told them he shot an 18-year-old man multiple times with a handgun after the 18-year-old attempted to rob him while he was sitting in his vehicle.

Police say they found the 18-year-old man in the roadway with "a number of gunshot wounds" and he was rushed to St. Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital for treatment. His condition was listed as serious Friday afternon.

Police say the 23-year-old man remained on the scene and was taken to the post department for questioning. He was released on his own recognizance and no charges have been filed at this time.

The shooting remains under investigation and the case will likely be submitted to the Madison County Prosecutor's Office for a final charging decision, police say.
