INDIANAPOLIS -- A pit bull was shot and critically injured early Wednesday morning by two men who broke into a south side home.

IMPD officers were called to the 3300 block of Olive Street shortly before 3:30 a.m. Wednesday on a report of a robbery in progress.

When they arrived, the residents of the home told them they were awakened by men wearing bandanas around their faces who they believe broke into the house by forcing their way through a dog door.

The victims told police one of the intruders brandished a pistol and, upon seeing their 1-year-old pit bull "Zane," shot their dog.

The dog then fled the residence through the open dog door. The animal was eventually found severely injured and bleeding from a gunshot wound. It was transported for emergency medical attention.

The suspects reportedly stole a gaming system, two cellphones and a wallet before leaving the residence through the back door.

Neither of the residents of the house was injured during the robbery.

Evidence technicians recovered a bullet fragment from the scene, but no arrests had yet been made as of Wednesday afternoon.

If you have any information about this incident, you’re asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
