INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced a child was injured early Saturday while handling a firearm and was not shot.

According to information from IMPD, detectives determined no charges will be filed and the case has been closed.

Officers were called to Community East Hospital on Saturday morning on a report of a juvenile that had been taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Police originally said it appeared the 3-year-old child accidentally shot themselves in the finger with a gun that was in the home, but detectives determined the child was injured while handling the gun and did not suffer a gunshot wound.
