WASHINGTON COUNTY — A 20-year-old Southern Indiana woman has been charged with felony battery of her fiancee's two-year-old son following a six-month investigation.

Indiana State Police arrested the woman Tuesday for battery and neglect of a dependent, both felonies, and she was taken to the Washington County Jail.

According to information from state police, in August 2019, the boy was transported to Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville. Indiana State Trooper Tyler Matthew was dispatched to the hospital after the Washington County Indiana Department of Child Services requested help investigating possible child abuse.

State police said the investigation revealed the child's father first took the toddler to the Scott County Hospital after he was told the boy caught his leg in a crib at home. Investigators found the child's primary caregiver at the time was the father's fiancee.

Doctors at Norton Children also contacted the University of Louisville Pediatric Forensic Medicine Unit. Matthew then turned his findings over to the Washington County Prosecutor's Office, and he arrested the woman Tuesday.

The child has been placed with relatives on his father's side, state police said.
