INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis paramedic is facing criminal charges after allegedly admitting to stealing fentanyl meant for patients.
In November, the Indianapolis DEA district office received information that a St. Vincent Hospital paramedic had admitted to the theft of controlled substances.
According to an affidavit filed in the case, paramedic Jeanan Joseph, 30, admitted that she had stolen a total of seven vials of fentanyl on six different occasions.
Joseph reportedly told investigators she had stolen fentanyl from a car crash patient at 38th Street and Lafayette Road and from another patient at the Township Line Apartments.
“Joseph reported that she would normally administer a partial dose of fentanyl to the patient in need, and instead of properly disposing of the remaining as waste, she would use the fentanyl herself,” investigators wrote in the affidavit.
On Nov. 7, Joseph told investigators she took a full vial of fentanyl from the ambulance with no documentation.
Marion County prosecutors filed charges of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit, possession of a narcotic drug and theft against Joseph on Tuesday.
Obtaining a controlled substance by fraud or deceit and possession of a narcotic drug are both level 6 felonies that carry a sentencing range of 6 months to 2.5 years in prison.
