MADISON — A man is in custody after Indiana State Police say he crashed his vehicle while being pursued and killed two of his passengers.

A Madison Police Department officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Thursday around 3:45 p.m. when the driver fled onto State Road 7.

After a pursuit that lasted an unknown amount of time, the 18-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into two utility poles on SR 256 near Thompson Road.

A front seat passenger, Tyler Cooley, 18, and a backseat passenger, Brooklyn James, 19, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was airlifted to a Louisville hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

Police say the driver was unlicensed at the time of the crash.

SR 256 was closed for approximately seven hours while accident reconstructionists and detectives worked to determine the details of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

It is unclear what charges will be filed in the case at this time.
