UNION CITY — One person is dead after shots were exchanged between a suspect in a suspicious person call and responding police officers.

According to Randolph County Sheriff Art Moystner, it began around 7 a.m. after officers were called on report of a suspicious person in the 100 block of Pleasant Drive in Union City.

Moystner said as Union City police officers responded and located the man, he opened fire toward the officers. Police returned fire. A SWAT team was called to evacuate nearby homes, the sheriff said.

According to a report from the Indiana State Police, the suspect was hiding in the bushes at the corner of a home when he opened fire.
