INDIANAPOLIS — A suspect wanted in connection with the shooting of a security guard at an Indianapolis liquor store last month was shot Friday as officers attempted to take him into custody, police said.
It happened around noon in the parking lot of a Family Video store near the intersection of 30th Street and North Georgetown Road, according to Deputy Chief Chris Bailey, of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Bailey said members of the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit were tracking a man as part of an ongoing covert investigation.
"The officers were looking for a male who was wanted for battery with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon," Bailey said. "He was a suspect in the shooting of a security guard that occurred on March 27, 2019 at 3950 N. High School Road. During that incident the security guard in the liquor store, Liquorland, was shot twice."

Bailey said officers tracked the suspect to the parking lot. The suspect attempted to leave and officers blocked him in. The suspect reportedly exited the vehicle and began to flee in a northwesterly direction, but then turned around, dove back into the car in an apparent attempt to grab a handgun in the vehicle, Bailey said. That's when an officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect.
There is a handgun on the center console of the vehicle, Bailey said.
The suspect, who has not been identified by police, was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
Officers on scene immediately began rendering aid to the suspect before firefighters and EMS personnel arrived on scene, Bailey said.
No officers were injured.
