GREENWOOD — Johnson County deputies arrested an apparent drug dealer after a man allegedly bought heroin from him and died.

Deputies arrested 26-year-old Dawayne Mitchell Dillard of Indianapolis on Thursday for conspiracy to deal heroin and neglect of a dependent. Investigators say they believe Dillard sold heroin to a Greenwood man who later died from a suspected overdose.

The arrest is the result of a new state law that holds drug dealers accountable for overdose deaths. The law, which took effect on July 1, imposes harsher penalties on drug dealers if a person overdoses and dies, including up to 40 years in prison.
