GARY — A suspected drunk driver was traveling on the interstate with just three tires when she was stopped for speeding Tuesday afternoon.
Indiana State Police Sergeant Terrance Weems was on another traffic stop when he spotted the Ford SUV approaching at "faster than the posted speed limit," according to a press release issued by state police on Wednesday. As the vehicle passed the scene, the Weems noted the driver was traveling on three tires. The front passenger tire was gone and the driver was traveling on only the rim.
Weems followed the driver as she exited the interstate, pulling her over as she swerved into the curb.
The driver told Weems she didn't know what was wrong with her car but "all the lights on her dash were going off." She also said she was a home health care nurse and was on her way to a patient who lived in Chicago.
Weems said the driver appeared intoxicated and a certified test revealed she her Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) was more than three times the legal limit.
The 46-year-old woman was arrested and is facing charges of operating while intoxicated, failure to yield to law enforcement and operating on highway with non-compliant vehicle.
The incident remains under investigation.
