Thieves leaving drivers stranded by stealing tires, rims

Posted

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thieves are leaving central Indiana drivers stranded, but not by stealing their cars, but the tires off their cars.

At the Sundance Apartment on Indianapolis' southeast side, at least three residents reported their tires and rims were stolen off their vehicles in the same night.

"Just my rims and tires were over $3,200," Anthony Webster said. "Then there's damage done underneath my carb."

His Chevy Malibu was found sitting on cinderblocks. And he's one of at least three people who had this happen.

The thieves can pull off this crime in minutes. Wheels cost more than $1,000 each, making them an appealing target. One way to protect your vehicle is with a wheel, nut and lock kit.

There have been more than 160 property crimes reported within a mile of the complex in the last 90 days. The apartment complex is now alerting resident to be on the lookout and secure their cars.
