INDIANAPOLIS -- A 26-year-old Indianapolis woman will spend nearly 25 years in prison after pleading guilty but mentally ill Wednesday to stabbing her roommate to death in 2015.
Kiara Ivette Ciares-Quinones, 26, was arrested in May 2015 on charges of murder and kidnapping in connection with the death of her roommate, Vilma Soriano, and the kidnapping of four children ranging in age from 4 months to 7 years old.
Soriano was found dead at her north side apartment with 224 stab wounds on her body.
According to neighbors, Ciares confessed to killing Soriano, saying, “I killed her. Please take care of my baby.”

On Wednesday, Ciares entered a plea of guilty but mentally ill to two counts of kidnapping and one count of voluntary manslaughter.
She was sentenced to 9 years in prison on each count of kidnapping – to be served concurrently – and 22 years for the count of manslaughter. Ciares will receive credit for 888 days already served behind bars. The judge suspended four years of manslaughter sentence.
In total, Ciares received 24-and-a-half years in prison, to be accompanied by mandatory psychological/mental health treatment and four years of probation upon her release.
