AVON, Ind. -- CSX has shut down the repair facility and laid off employees at the Avon rail yard.
It is unclear at this time how many employees were affected by the shutdown.
The locomotive maintenance facility handles repairs and inspections on CSX's equipment.
The "hump yard," which sorts rail cars from one train to another, is still in operation.
CSX operates another rail yard on the southeast side of the city.
The company has about 1,700 employees in Indiana and operates 2,600 miles of track in the state.
CSX spokesperson Rob Doolittle released the following statement on Friday:
"CSX informed employees today that, effective immediately, operations were being discontinued at the locomotive maintenance facility located in the company’s Avon, Ind., rail yard. This decision will result in some employees being furloughed, although the final number of employees who will be impacted is not available at this time. This decision was made as part of an ongoing, comprehensive review by CSX’s management team to improve the company’s efficiency, safety and service to customers across its 21,000-mile network. No announcements have been made about any other operations at the Avon Yard."
