INDIANAPOLIS — School bus safety has been a big issue across Indiana ever since three children were killed at their bus stop in October. Now, Indiana's attorney general is weighing in on an extra safety measure that's currently not used in the state.
In an official opinion, Curtis Hill said school districts can choose to use extended stop arms to prevent vehicles from passing school buses.
He said a state board that sets safety standards for Indiana school buses can authorize the use of the extra-long stop signs that are already used in other states.
This year Indiana lawmakers passed legislation that increases the penalty for passing a school bus with its stop arm out — in response to the deadly accident in Fulton County.
