INDIANAPOLIS -- Michaels says an employee is not responsible for a display spelling out a racial slur that has outraged customers.

The company released the following statement Monday:

“Michaels strives to provide an inclusive environment for our customers, team members, and community. We have conducted a thorough investigation of this incident and have determined that the letters were not arranged by a Michaels associate.  However, our associate’s response to the situation did not meet our standards.  We regret that the incident occurred, and we have taken disciplinary action. Discrimination has no place in our society, and we appreciate the passion of our customers in condemning it.”

Customers were threatening to boycott Michaels after an Indianapolis woman posted a picture on Facebook about a racist display at the store.

According to her post, Bridgette Drake says she was shopping with her 12-year-old at Michaels when she saw a display spelling out a racial slur.

Drake says, when she complained, a Michael's employee laughed and said, "no really that is hilarious."

Customers have been calling for a boycott of Michaels on the store's Facebook page and are demanding answers.
